TWENTY-NINE

WEDNESDAY

A barrage of text messages, one after another, was what finally woke her up. Groaning, Freya rolled over, flinging her arm out to the bedside table where she always kept her phone charging at night.

It wasn’t there.

She forced herself to sit up, her head pounding. Her tongue stuck to the roof of her mouth, and her eyes felt like they had sand in them. Moving slowly, she rubbed the sleep away and swung her legs to the side to get out of bed.

It was only then that she realized she’d passed out on the sofa, not in bed.

Still dressed in her clothes from the previous day, she stood, groaning as her hip screamed at her. Her mouth was dry, her curls matted to the side of her head. And was that… drool? Disgusting.

She felt disgusting.

Her phone lit up yet again, and this time she saw it sitting on the coffee table. Lunging forward, she grabbed it, then sank back into the soft cushions. The sofa had to have been at least ten years old when she’d picked it up from Goodwill over the summer, but she never felt that she had time to go shopping for a new one.

“Okay, who has their panties in a twist?” she muttered, swiping on her phone. It lit up, shining right in her eyes, and she groaned, blinking hard for a moment. “Candy. What in the world?”

Her string of texts started an hour ago.

Talked to Steve’s baby momma again last night. She threw a fit about Brad trying to talk to her daughter. But she agreed to talk to me.

You’ll find this interesting—guess where Steve spent the night on Sunday after hanging out with Charlotte? Spoiler: it wasn’t alone in the bed he shared with Millicent.

He definitely has an alibi, but no wonder he didn’t want to tell us the truth. Sleeping with your baby momma who isn’t your fiancée? Not a good look.

Are you around? We need to regroup. I know what Chief said, but he can shove it. You have to work this case.

Freya?

Freya, where are you?

Freya, I swear I’ll drive out to your house right now if you don’t answer me.

The last text was the one that finally lit a fire under her. Clearing her throat, she tapped the call button, turned down the volume, and held the phone up to her ear.

Candy picked up immediately. “Come on, I was beginning to think you were dead. You know you can’t just disappear in the middle of a murder investigation. People will start to get worried.”

“Good morning to you too. You do know that if Chief found out you were looping me in on the case, you’d be suspended with me, right?” Freya knew she sounded terrible and cleared her voice again. “Just texting me is enough to set him off.”

“Yeah, right. What’s he going to do, suspend all the detectives? I think not. Can you imagine how quickly everyone in town would turn on him? He’s hotheaded, but he’s not stupid. Besides, Freya, we need you.
